Tricia Baga at Greene Naftali Gallery

It’s post-apocalypse in Trisha Baga’s imagination – Florida has mostly sunk into the sea and the array of artifacts left behind, including this Doritos bag and chips, have been rendered in ceramic and put on display. In the video at rear, peacocks pick at a seed portrait of Rosie O’Donnell. Baga’s rich imagination makes an unknown world all the stranger. Jacqueline Humphries at Greene Naftali Gallery

New York abstract painter Jacqueline Humphries imports the digital world into her latest paintings, bringing the painting surface in and out of focus with swirls of silver and purple and using overlays of dots to suggest ellipses or colons thereby signaling interrupted communication or expectation. (At GreeneNaftali in Chelsea through June 20th).

Laura Owens in ‘Loveless’ at Greene Naftali Gallery

LA painter Laura Owens mashes together levels of reality in this huge, untitled painting, blending an inspirational phrase, a rather grotesque character pouring lemonade from his faucet-nose, a bike wheel (Duchamp homage?), a grid of varying size and thickness and a finger swipe pattern over all of it, suggesting that meaning is being uncovered or wiped away. (At Greene Naftali Gallery through April 26th).

‘You break it, you buy it’ does not apply at the Austrian art collective Gelatin’s latest solo show at Greene Naftali in Chelsea, where the point is to send art objects flying in order to ‘finish’ them.  Pressing the pedal to send objects like these crashing to the floor feels as wrong as dropping a baby, regardless of their artistic merit (or lack thereof).  (Through Nov 13th.)
