Kay WalkingStick’s paintings at Chelsea’s Hales Gallery traverse and glory in the North American landscape, from mountain peaks, to eroded canyons to windy shorelines.  Each is overlaid with a pattern derived from imagery created by Native American peoples who have lived in the areas depicted.  Together, the patterns and scenery speak to the deep connectedness of Native histories and culture and the land.  (On view through April 16th.)

Ryan Preciado at Canada Gallery

Inspired by the Pope’s mitre, Chumash tradition, California car culture and much more, young west coast designer Ryan Preciado presents furniture at Canada Gallery that conveys comfort, pleasure and sturdiness.  Like Matt Conners’ abstract paintings in the adjoining gallery, color and structure dominate our sensory experience.  Practical and welcoming, Preciado’s approach to design was impacted by watching his sister squirm to get comfortable on the family couch.  (On view in Tribeca through March 5th).

.DRIFT in ‘Group Presentation’ at Pace Gallery

It’s not unusual to consider where and how our everyday consumer goods were manufactured, but Amsterdam-based design team Studio Drift goes deeper.  Via their ‘Materialism’ project – samples of which are now on view in Pace Gallery’s current tech-friendly group show – Drift practices a kind of reverse engineering by breaking down light bulbs, cell phones and water bottles, as well as historic weapons and this bicycle, into component parts which are then displayed as pleasingly tidy arrangements of colorful cubes.  Guessing what each piece represents is an engaging game that ultimately prompts viewers to question how much we know about the goods we consume.  (On view on 25th Street in Chelsea through April 24th).

Irving Penn at Pace Gallery

Irving Penn coined the term ‘Photographism’ to describe his style, a synthesis of graphic design and fine art, but the impact of his images goes beyond words.  Isolated against a white background that emphasizes strong tonal contrast and boldly outlined form, this 1971 photograph at Pace Gallery lends these two buds a hyperreality and heightened beauty.  (On view in Chelsea through Feb 13th).

The Haas Brothers at Marianne Boesky Gallery

The Haas Brother’s zany show of comical, beaded sculpture at Chelsea’s Marianne Boesky Gallery announces the duo’s foray into the fine art world.  Having made a hit in the design community for the past decade with otherworldly furnishings, the twins collaborated on the new work with collaborators, Monkeybiz, to present an assortment of odd creatures and eccentric plant-life in a brilliantly painted, eye-popping setting.  (On view through Oct 26th).
