Critics have unanimously praised Sarah Crowner’s colorful installation, ‘The Wave’ at Lower East Side Gallery Nicelle Beauchene, for chasing away the winter blahs with a gorgeous aqua-colored tile, stage-like floor. Here, Crowner quotes textile designs from Alexander Girard that enhance the folksy beauty of this installation. (Through Feb 2nd).

You don’t have to be into fashion to appreciate the spectacle that is ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier’ at Brooklyn Museum. A moving catwalk, mannequins with animated faces, and more turn the normally sleepy Brooklyn Museum into a carnival celebrating Gaultier’s extravagant, gender-bending vision, which germinated in childhood when he fashioned a conical bra for his teddy, some 30 years prior to his designs for Madonna’s ‘Blond Ambition’ tour. (At Brooklyn Museum through Feb 23rd).

Cuban artist Kcho grew up traveling between his home on an island off the coast of Cuba and the mainland, and boats – ‘keys’ to unlocking the ‘door’ of the sea – are a frequently recurring subject. This one is a standout in the Museum of Art & Design’s ‘Against the Grain’ group exhibition of cutting edge art & design made from wood. (Through Sept 15th).
