Cal Lane’s steel sculptures of lacy underwear – incongruous in their industrial material vs subject matter – are real attention grabbers but take a back seat to altered found materials in the artist’s mini-retrospective at C24 Gallery in Chelsea. Though they appear light and whimsical, these shovels from 2016 recall steel sculptural panels commissioned by the MTA for Knickerbocker Ave station which were inspired by the area’s architecture. The wheelbarrow is one of the show’s best pieces for pushing the material, achieving a surprising delicacy via intricate patterning. (On view through May 10th).

Brendan Lee Satish Tang in ‘Earthen Delights’ at C24 Gallery
Canadian artist Brendan Lee Satish Tang’s blend of traditional-looking ceramics and robot-like forms at C24 are unlike anything in the Chelsea galleries now. Inspired by both ormolu, a technique popular in 18th century France that involved adding decorative elements to existing art objects, as well as manga/anime culture, Tang grafts ceramic elements onto bases that look like engines, rockets or robots. His curious hybrids crash together different times and histories to humorous and intriguing effect. (On view through July 17th. Masks and social distancing required).
Robin Kang in ‘Pool Party’ at C24 Gallery
Robin Kang morphs circuit board imagery into patterns resembling peacock feathers in a textile created with a digitally operated Jacquard hand loom. An abundance of gold from metallic yarns suggests a link to the divine, the receding space a throne-like seat or corridor leading to the beyond. (On view in ‘Pool Party’ organized by Field Projects at C24 Gallery in Chelsea through Sept 21st).
