Washington-based glass artist Dylan Martinez fools the eye with solid glass sculptures that appear to be plastic bags filled with water. “Our desires often override our true perception of reality,” the artist explains, anticipating the strong urge to believe that there’s water inside each ‘bag’ when, in fact, it’s the reflections on the exterior that create an illusion of movement. A standout in Lyons Wier Gallery’s ‘Fire & Water’ group exhibition, Martinez also amazes with glass sculptures resembling cross sections of a vase, undulating in space. (On view in Chelsea through July 6th).

Cayce Zavaglia at Lyons Wier Gallery
Cayce Zavaglia pushes realism into new territory in her stunningly deft embroidered portraits of friends and family. Long stitches become smooth lengths of hair while tiny dense ones create the interplay of light and color on skin. Here, Hudson’s youthful face and textured plaid shirt stand out against an electric, lime-colored background. (On view in Chelsea at Lyons Wier Gallery through June 2nd).

Greg Haberny at Lyons Wier Gallery
Considering the profuse detail of the 2-D collages, floor covering and pencil-studded ceiling of his installation at Chelsea’s Lyons Wier Gallery, it comes as no surprise that Greg Haberny was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. The frustration of a childhood defined by medicines and misdiagnoses comes through loud and clear. (Through October 5th).
