Katy Fischer at Louis B. James

Arranged in vitrines or along this long shelf, Katy Fischer’s ceramic objects look like archaeological finds. They’re a humorous take on the notion that ceramics must have use-value and yet provocative in prompting consideration of what those uses might be. (At Lower East Side gallery Louis B. Nora Griffin at Louis B. James

A painting is set into a painting, set into a painted frame in Nora Griffin’s ‘Painting Culture,’ a nestled presentation of homey organic shapes, cheery color and unselfconsciously handmade marks that conjures 80s design and a kind of youthful freedom exemplified by a zany silver zigzag. (At Louis B. James on the Lower East Side through March 20th).

Martin Roth at Louis B. James Gallery

Parakeets without owners occupy the upper reaches of Louis B James Gallery, while rubble shipped in suitcases from the Syrian/Turkish border is strewn on the floor, creating a situation that prompts meditation on freedom and migration by Austrian born, NY-based artist Martin Roth. (On the Lower East Side through Oct 18th).

Anna Sew Hoy in ‘Touch the Moon’ at Louis B. James Gallery

Based in LA, artist Anna Sew Hoy has more interesting purposes for trench coats than wearing them.  This one, titled ‘Black Noir/beige tan’ recalls a line drawing or futuristic garb for a sci-fi thriller; but held aloft by two precious and strange objects – a resin, finger-shaped hook and a ceramic hanger – it evokes appealingly idiosyncratic storylines.  (At Louis B. James Gallery on the Lower East Side through Jan 26th).

Derrick Adams at Louis B. James Gallery

Brooklyn-based artist Derrick Adams’ grid of glittery men’s shirts and ties looks fabulous and conformist at the same time, recalling Fred Wilson’s early 90s guard uniforms that pointed out how uniformity leads to anonymity.   A trophy-like chalice placed just out of reach on top of this wall-mounted sculpture seems to offer a lofty reward for someone who’ll step out from the crowd. (At Louis B. James on the Lower East Side, through Oct 19th).
