‘Not everything needs to be exalted and monetized,’ says Matthew Chambers, who allows gallery visitors to flip through his huge, painted books. On the gallery walls at Feuer Mesler, Chambers explores color via appealing flower paintings (left wall), tulip canvases are all about pattern, and torn canvas strips [right wall) morph into textured monochromes. Like protagonists in a young adults detective novel, Jane Corrigan’s svelte sleuths ooze intrigue as they receive covert messages, investigate strange noises and meet secretively at night. The hook is strong. What are they up to? (At Feuer Mesler through Feb 14th).

After a stand-out show featuring paintings of sporty girls at Kerry Schuss Gallery last fall, Jane Corrigan is back on the Lower East Side with three large canvases at Feuer/Mesler. It’s hard to tell if the ragtag subject of ‘Gatherer’ is eyeballing us or her scattered carrots with a wild look; either way, the effect is disarming. (Through July 31st.)
