Erin O’Keefe in ‘AND/ALSO Photography (Mis)represented’ at Paul Kasmin Gallery

New York photographer Erin O’Keefe’s beguiling photographs in Paul Kasmin Gallery’s summer group show are an immediate knockout for their bold color contrasts and rich, saturated hues.  They get more complex on close viewing – when viewers look at the top portion of this image, it’s unclear if we’re looking at a painting or a photo.  Lower down, where the sculpted wooden block meets the surface on which it’s resting, the dimensions of this photographed space become clear.  That this is a photo and not a painting or sculpture allows a delayed legibility that creates a provocative open-endedness to this image. Theodora Allen at Paul Kasmin Gallery

LA painter Theodora Allen’s first New York solo show features medieval shields as frames for plants with medicinal or harmful uses.  Here, the hallucinogenic Jimsonweed materializes on the support like a ghostly presence, pointing to the non-tangible world of experience.  (On view at Paul Kasmin Gallery’s 515 West 27th Street location through March 9th.)

Hein Koh in ‘Seed’ at Paul Kasmin Gallery

Hein Koh’s ‘Big Mother of Pearl’ sculpture injects a note of humor in Paul Kasmin Gallery’s summer group show, ‘Seed,’ curated by Yvonne Force.  Force identifies a spiritual generative force in the act of creating art; Koh’s curvy, colorful and rhinestone-glittery shell has just produced a pearl that resembles an eye and a portal into other galaxies.  (On view in Chelsea through August 10th).

Robert Indiana at Paul Kasmin Gallery

Robert Indiana’s mid-1960s monument to love continues to work its magic on audiences around the world as the artist nears his 90th birthday. Now at Paul Kasmin Gallery, this towering steel sculpture multiplies and magnifies the term in all its myriad understandings. Bosco Sodi at Paul Kasmin Gallery

Bosco Sodi’s hand-formed ceramic cubes at Paul Kasmin Gallery are new but appear weathered, evoking mankind’s ancient and ongoing relationship with clay. Behind, a mixed media painting continues Sodi’s signature practice of mixing pigment, sawdust, glue and other materials into an explosive, vividly colored abstraction.
