Olga de Amaral at Lisson Gallery

‘For me, gold is the sun,’ explains octogenarian Columbian artist Olga de Amaral as she describes the importance and stunning impact of the material in her textiles.  Hanging assemblages of gold-covered linen positioned near the door of Chelsea’s Lisson Gallery catch the natural light and resemble ancient carved stones; further in the gallery, this piece adds palladium, another metal that reflects light and adds to the luxurious quality of this labor-intensive artwork.  (On view in Chelsea through Dec 18th.  Masks and proof of vaccination required.)

Josep Grau-Garriga at Salon94 Bowery

At over twenty feet tall, late Catalan fiber artist Josep Grau-Garriga’s monumental tapestry ‘February Light’ dominates visitors to Salon94 Bowery.  Made in the 70s after Grau-Garriga had pioneered a move away from realist tapestries crafted with expensive materials into expressionist compositions fashioned from fibers including string, hemp and even old sacks, February Light’s wooden rods and ropes give the piece a remarkable boldness.  Created in the years just after the death of dictator Francisco Franco, the many openings in the blood-red areas of the artwork seem to continue Grau-Garriga’s frequent political allusions.  (On view on the Lower East Side through Feb 29th).

Sheila Hicks at Sikkema Jenkins & Co.

Known for large-scale installations of hanging, twisting and looping fibers, Sheila Hicks favors rich, 2-D color-fields in her latest solo show at Sikkema Jenkins & Co.  As seen in this detail, Hicks combined several panels wrapped in individual strands of linen floss to create harmonies that speak to a lifetime of absorbing and rethinking textiles from around the world.  (On view through July 6th).

Terri Friedman in ‘A Line Can Go Anywhere’ at James Cohan Gallery

Terri Friedman’s multi-part fiber artworks have huge presence; bold colors – from lush green to fiery orange – suggest abstracted strata of the earth and the making process is never far from the surface of a viewer’s consciousness.   (On view at James Cohan Gallery in Chelsea through Oct 14th).

Sheila Hicks on the High Line

Known for sometimes-monumental installations of fiber art, Paris-based American artist Sheila Hicks has transformed the wilder northern reaches of the High Line with an ambitious, twisting arrangement of fabric-covered tubes. Primary colors and cable-like forms complement the construction-site aesthetic of the neighborhood as the development of Hudson Yards continues apace.
