Luchita Hurtado at Hauser & Wirth Gallery

In every roll of film Luchita Hurtado shot, there’d be an image in shadow, explains her son, the artist Matt Mullican.  Shadows dominate two walls of drawings featuring the artist’s own silhouette in a show now on view at Hauser & Wirth Gallery, conveying a rich, inner life that the artist didn’t care to display to the public.  Yet elements like a feather or these bands of vibrant color offer clues to emotions and mental states that belie Hurtado’s apparent withdrawal.  (On view in Chelsea through Oct 31st.  Visits can be arranged by timed reservation.)

Tauba Auerbach at Paula Cooper Gallery

Helix, wave and vortex forms have inspired Tauba Auerbach to create an array of painting, glass sculpture, woven work, video and more informed by natural forms and logical systems.  The ‘Ligature Drawings’ in her latest solo show at Chelsea’s Paula Cooper Gallery consider joined and curving forms, exploring language as a system of structured meaning.  (On view through Dec 15th).

David Hockney at Pace Gallery

Can the grandeur of the Yosemite landscape be captured on a small screen? David Hockney gives it a good shot, to luminous effect in his printed iPad drawings, now on view at Pace Gallery’s 25th Street location in Chelsea. (Through June 18th).

Amilcar de Castro in ‘Empty House/Casa Vazia’ at Luhring Augustine Gallery

Like sketchbook pages mounted to the wall, Brazilian Neoconcretist sculptor Amilcar de Castro’s model-like Corten steel sculptures resemble drawings for future pieces as well as typography, recalling the artist’s graphic design background. (At Chelsea’s Luhring Augustine Gallery through Aug 28th).

David Hockney at Pace Gallery

New media takes a turn for the traditional in David Hockney’s new series at Pace Gallery, for which his iPad drawings are displayed as prints. Still, the Brit art icon’s colors remain vibrant, transforming the English countryside with fantastical, south-of-France brightness. (At Pace’s 508 West 25th Street space in Chelsea through Nov 1st).
