Roni Horn at Hauser & Wirth Gallery

Roni Horn once said that glass can convey ‘the most ideal expression of color.’ In two same-but-different cast-glass sculptures at Chelsea’s Hauser & Wirth Gallery, a tranquil, blue form immediately invites visitors to draw near and marvel at the reflections of light on the water-like surface of a substance that is neither fully liquid nor solid. (On view through July 29th).

Matthew Brandt at Yossi Milo Gallery

Soon after the scandal over tainted drinking water in Flint, Michigan broke in spring 2016, Matthew Brandt visited the beleaguered General Motors town, creating beautiful images using toxic water. Brandt collected river water and used it to wash over and degrade cyan, magenta and yellow sheets bearing an image of the river’s dam. Recombined in a lightbox, a damaged image represents a devastated landscape. (At Yossi Milo Gallery in Chelsea through Jan 21st.)

Edward Burtynsky at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery

This stunning aerial view of irrigation systems in Cadiz, Spain is part of Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky’s Water series, which examines human use of the planet’s most valuable resource, specifically as it is harnessed for aquaculture. Duke Riley at the Queens Museum of Art

Located in the same room as the Queens Museum’s model of New York City’s water system, Duke Riley’s ‘That’s What She Said’ is a commissioned work warning against misuse of a precious natural resource. To the left, an Egyptian goddess creates the waters that flow down into a landscape destroyed by power plants and the indifference of its inhabitants. (Through Jan 1, 2017).

Martin Klimas at Foley Gallery

Known for photographing freeze dried flowers as he explodes them and liquid pigment as it is blasted by sound from a speaker, German artist Martin Klimas has come up with another way to make merge sound and art in a new body of work at Foley Gallery. The ‘Pure Tones’ series involves a frequency generator and still water, which is disturbed in surprisingly beautiful patterns, as evidenced by this grid of surfaces. (On the Lower East Side through May 22nd).
