Kiki Kogelnik at Mitchell-Innes & Nash

As Pop art burst onto the US art scene in the early 60s, Austrian artist Kiki Kogelnik moved to New York and forged her own related path, imagining humans as robots, bombs as sculpture and later, models as aliens.  In this painting from 1979, Kogelnik morphed the fashion-forward woman of the day into a creature with glowing eyes and stylish garments, hair and skin in reptilian green tones.  Set against floating triangles, the women are as abstract as their backgrounds and ready to defy convention.  (On view at Mitchell-Innes & Nash in Chelsea through June 29th).

Jocelyn Hobbie at Fredericks and Freiser Gallery

Realist painter Jocelyn Hobbie continues to ponder female subjects in a profusion of patterns in her latest show at Fredericks & Freiser Gallery in Chelsea.  The title of this piece, ‘Hollyhock and Anemones,’ ignores the figure at center, suggesting that she’s competing for attention with other decorative elements of the painting.  Hobbie’s glowing skinned women radiate an unreal perfection; while painted in oil, they appear to have been created in the digital realm.  Positioning them in a no-man’s land of ambiguous space and purpose, Hobbie generates a seductive uncertain image.  (On view through Dec 22nd).

Sophie Crumb at DCKT Contemporary

Sophie Crumb ups the absurdity of a 2007 Paris Vogue supermarket fashion shoot with her skillful watercolor and ink renditions of the original magazine photos. Sharing a show with her mother, Aline Crumb at Lower East Side gallery DCKT Contemporary, both artists present fascinating portraits of fashion victims. (Through October 19th).

David LaChapelle at Paul Kasmin Gallery

Energy drinks, green tea tins and more consumer packaging form the basis of semi-retired fashion photography icon David LaChapelle’s latest series, ‘Refineries.’  Working with professional model builders, LaChapelle makes our consumption of fossil fuels – and the materials create from them – personal.  (At Chelsea’s Paul Kasmin Gallery through March 1st.)

Robert Fontinelli at Feature Inc

Bodies and furniture become one in New York artist Robert Fontinelli’s huge drawings, touching on materialism and how we define our personalities through design choices.  Here in Feature, Inc’s front windows, two men merged with theater seats and each other suggest two identities becoming one.  (On the Lower East Side through Feb 16th).
