Aliza Nisenbaum’s portrait of Kayhan, sprawled on the floor surrounded by newspaper pages, is a standout in FLAG Art Foundation’s huge and engrossing group exhibition, ‘The Times,’ which gathers a range of artwork related to or inspired by the New York Times. Nisenbaum’s portraits of undocumented immigrants offer a portal into lives deliberately lived in private; here, Kayhan’s apparent comfort may not apply beyond these walls. Admiringly called ‘expertly constructed, aggressively psychedelic and curiously weird’ recently by the New York Times, Steve DiBenedetto’s latest abstract canvases flirt with representation but elude it, hinting at a half-understood world beyond. (At Derek Eller Gallery through April 25th).

New York artist Yuken Teruya continues to craft amazingly meticulous works on paper from unlikely materials, including a series of floral growths from the front pages of the New York Times in his latest solo show. Here, a plant rises from a photo accompanying an article about illegal logging in the Amazon rainforest. (At Josee Bienvenu Gallery through April 11th.)

Art applauds nature in Berlin-based American sculptor David Adamo’s hand-made, ceramic termite mounds. Called “exceptionally appealing as objects” by the New York Times, the mini-mounds are smaller than they’d appear in nature but invite wonder at insect engineering.
