Kota Ezawa at Murray Guy Gallery

Kota Ezawa’s signature simplified, graphic images are well suited to his current body of work – lightboxes that replicate thirteen artworks stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in 1990. Contrary to the carefully executed detail in the original painting depicted here by Johannes Vermeer, Ezawa’s more generalized rendering suggests the omissions of memory. Leidy Churchman at Murray Guy Gallery

New York artist Leidy Churchman considers what it means to be above it all, replicating a promotional picture for 432 Park Ave, the hemisphere’s tallest residential building (for now). Known for more its exclusivity than its architectural merit, Churchman turns the tower’s top floors into a glowing Olympian retreat. (At Chelsea’s Murray Guy through June 6th).

Francis Cape at Murray Guy Gallery

Can a room full of benches inspire community-minded thinking? Francis Cape’s hand-crafted replicas of furniture from Shaker and other 19th century separatist communities, presented en masse at Chelsea’s Murray Guy Gallery, are objects whose value is rooted in their usefulness to many people – opposite of art as luxury commodity.  (Through Aug 9th).

Margaret Lee at Murray Guy

This tidy pile of tangerines looks good enough to eat, but beware – they’re plaster sculptures created by Margaret Lee, who has become known for her ultra life-like fruits and veg.  Placed next a blue cushion on a wooden table, this minimal, three-dimensional still life offers the visual pleasure of an orderly arrangment. (At Murray Guy, Chelsea through Feb 23rd).
