Anne Neukamp at Marlborough Contemporary

Anne Neukamp’s post-analogue paintings picture office tools in large-scale, graphically simple images that look as if they’ve been composed in digital space, yet are manifest before us in oil, tempera and linen. Titled ‘Morsel,’ this tantalizing icon offers a puzzle piece and a mystery envelope, dangling meaning in front of viewers. (At Chelsea’s Marlborough Contemporary through June 24th).

Lars Fisk at Marlborough Gallery

While living in an artfully converted shipping container next to a Costco parking lot in Queens, New York sculptor Lars Fisk developed his hugely entertaining concept of a real-world place rolled up into a tidy, circular package. His first show at Chelsea’s Marlborough Gallery features the largest ‘Lot Ball’ to date, along with balls inspired by subway signs and a Mr Softee truck. (Through Oct 15th).

John Riepenhoff at Marlborough Gallery




How can an artist pay homage to his/her influencers? John Riepenhoff’s ‘Group Show’ walks the line between flattery and offense by recreating artworks in the style of his contemporaries and predecessors. At the show’s entrance, legs make a stand for a space-bending geometric abstraction (actually painted) by Susie Rosmarin. (At Chelsea’s Marlborough Gallery through Feb 6th).

Keith Mayerson at Marlborough Gallery

Dozens of paintings stacked floor to ceiling on all four walls of Marlborough Gallery’s main space are a portrait of New York artist Keith Mayerson’s life and mass media influences. Judy Garland as Dorothy, MLK, JFK and James Dean make starring appearances in images that establish common ground between viewer and artist by way of our pop culture heritage. (In Chelsea through Dec 23rd).

Josh Smith in ‘Marlborough Lights’ at Marlborough Gallery, LES

Given that Marlborough Gallery’s first show in its Lower East Side space was themed on pizza, an exhibition titled ‘Marlborough Lights’ had to happen sooner or later. Here, Josh Smith’s jack o’ lantern basketball lights the way back to Sadie Laska’s magically glowing, alien-like creature and Oscar Tuazon’s blocky, street-light-like lamp. (Through Aug 1st).
