Josefina Concha at Praxis Gallery

Chilean artist Josefina Concha’s textile-based sculptures, now on view at Chelsea’s Praxis Gallery, are immediately intriguing for their color, form and technique as well as their playful engagement with art history.  Situated front and center in the gallery is a table covered with undulating fabric, an update on Judy Chicago’s famous Dinner Party installation with a new guest list that includes Concha’s expressive, sewn paintings of Alice Neel, Velasquez and Francis Bacon installed over the table.  Elsewhere, a vibrantly colored, minimal panel pays homage to Agnes Martin while these two clustered organic forms recall the open blooms of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings. (On view through June 2nd).

Robert Kushner at DC Moore Gallery

Celebrated Pattern and Decoration artist Robert Kushner wears his heart on his sleeve in his latest solo show titled ‘I Heart Matisse’ at DC Moore Gallery in Chelsea.  Strong pattern and bright color dominate still lives that include ceramics and textiles in his collection.  By mentally inhabiting Henri Matisse’s light-drenched South of France style, Kushner not only pays homage but celebrates optimism and pleasure in nature and creativity.  (On view through June 19th).

Adrian Ghenie at Pace Gallery

Ghosts of Van Gogh and Gauguin haunt Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie’s latest body of work, now on view at Pace Gallery.  Titled ‘Hooliganism,’ the show is inspired by the idea that beneath the attractive colors or forms of historic avant-garde painting is an explosive departure from painterly norms.  This painting recalls Van Gogh’s 1889 self-portrait made after cutting his ear but substitutes Van Gogh’s impassive stare with a face literally swirling with psychic force.  (On view through April 24th).

Georg Baselitz at Gagosian Gallery

Iconic 20th century German painter Georg Baselitz pays homage to artists who’ve inspired him in a new series of portrait paintings at Gagosian Gallery.  Presented in Baselitz’s characteristic upside-down format, figures from Tracey Emin to Willem de Kooning (pictured here) hover against black backgrounds in an ethereal glow that suggests a ghostly background presence in the mind of the artist.  (On view through March 16th).
