Pat Oleszko and Anthea Hamilton in ‘Living Things’ at JTT Gallery

Whether it’s the wheezing, inflatable breast sculpture by Pat Oleszko or Anthea Hamilton’s sea-life encrusted boot near the entrance, the group exhibition ‘Living Things’ at JTT Gallery immediately feels set apart.  Though the artists hail from different generations and employ various media, performance and transformation is key.  Here, Pat Oleszko’s huge hammer costume appears in an accompanying film, ‘Tool Box,’ while Anthea Hamilton’s Papilio whip butterfly dominates the back wall with leather whips for antenna.  (On view on the Lower East Side through Nov 28th.  Masks and social distancing are required.)

Richard Slee at Hales Gallery

British ceramic artist Richard Slee’s ongoing installation of ceramic hammers and tools with wooden handles is a thought-provoking jumble of tongue-in-cheek contradictions, starting with the impossibility of using any of these tools for actual labor.  Like Pete Seeger’s famous intention to ‘hammer out love,’ the concept is more convincing than the reality, as suggested by this abandoned pile.  (On view at Hales Gallery in Chelsea through Feb 23rd).

David Kennedy Cutler at Derek Eller Gallery

David Kennedy Cutler pushes the idea of self-display by putting a scanned and printed effigy of himself in a vitrine in his latest solo show at Derek Eller Gallery. Wearing one of his signature plaid shirts, further enhanced by a kale and bread pattern, Kennedy Cutler refers to his role as consumer as the audience consumes his artwork. (On view on the Lower East Side through June 25th).
