Alice Neel\u2019s desire to \u2018bear witness\u2019 to the humanity she encountered resulted in a range of portraits, from bohemian downtown artists to her Harlem neighbors to colorful characters seen on the street.\u00a0 \u2018Conversation on a Bus\u2019 from 1944 exaggerates the features of two chattering friends but at the same time lures us into their animated conversation and, in the eyes of the woman in the brown hat, hints at the pleasure of intimacy with a friend. \u00a0Despite the Met\u2019s recent extensive survey of Neel\u2019s work, this selection of paintings from Neel\u2019s early decades at David Zwirner Gallery<\/a> feels fresh and full of revelation.\u00a0 (On view on 20th<\/sup> Street in Chelsea through Oct 16th<\/sup>.)<\/p>\n
