Even in moments of tenderness and connection, Aaron Gilbert<\/a>\u2019s dead-eyed characters are shaped by the difficulty of their circumstances.\u00a0 In this painting titled \u2018Conspirators,\u2019 currently on view at PPOW Gallery<\/a>, these men\u2019s tired expressions suggest they\u2019re not just sharing a story or chatting but hatching a desperate plan.\u00a0 The scene recalls Charles White\u2019s 1942 painting of two working men in close conversation that was recently on view in the Whitney\u2019s Mexican muralist show. But while White\u2019s men engage with feeling about the news or activism; Gilbert\u2019s operate with little conviction and less hope.
