New York photographer Erin O\u2019Keefe<\/a>\u2019s beguiling photographs in Paul Kasmin Gallery\u2019s summer group show<\/a> are an immediate knockout for their bold color contrasts and rich, saturated hues.\u00a0 They get more complex on close viewing \u2013 when viewers look at the top portion of this image, it\u2019s unclear if we\u2019re looking at a painting or a photo.\u00a0 Lower down, where the sculpted wooden block meets the surface on which it\u2019s resting, the dimensions of this photographed space become clear.\u00a0 That this is a photo and not a painting or sculpture allows a delayed legibility that creates a provocative open-endedness to this image.
