Jeffrey Gibson<\/a>\u2019s enormous structure at Socrates Sculpture Park<\/a> initiates the park\u2019s new \u2018Monuments Now<\/a>\u2019 project, a series of sculptures focusing on the current hot-button topic of public monuments and their representation of US history.\u00a0 Inspired by the pre-Columbian Mississippian earthen structures of Cahokia and wheat-pasted with eye-popping posters in bright colors that celebrate a queer sensibility, Gibson\u2019s ziggurat dominates the park with joyous pulsing patterns.\u00a0 Texts on each side read, \u2018Powerful because we are different\u2019 and \u2018Respect indigenous land,\u2019 strong messages to read against the backdrop of Mannahatta, as Manhattan was known prior to the arrival of Europeans.
