In his photographic images featuring cotton plants now on view at Chelsea\u2019s Laurence Miller Gallery<\/a>, John Dowell<\/a> aims to \u2018evoke the remembering, feeling and sense of wonder in African American ancestral strategies of survival.\u2019\u00a0 Dowell inserts cotton fields in photos of Central Park, Wall Street, Trinity Church and other famous New York sites, creating haunting images and recalling injustices inflicted on African American communities at these places and elsewhere.\u00a0 The show\u2019s centerpiece, \u2018Lost in Cotton,\u2019 invites visitors to enter an enclosure of hanging panels that recall the artist\u2019s grandmother\u2019s frightening childhood experience of getting lost among tall cotton plants.\u00a0 (On view through Jan 25th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
