In his latest show at Marianne Boesky Gallery<\/a>, Barnaby Furnas morphs Grant Woods\u2019 iconic American Gothic (now on view at the Whitney) into an eerie portrait of pitchfork-clutching quadruplet sisters defined by their flatness and conformity.\u00a0 Other paintings feature charging bison and Mt Rushmore, summoning iconic \u2018American\u2019 imagery to question what that means now.\u00a0 Even Furnas\u2019 new experiments in painting technique \u2013 he has worked with the research group ARTMATR to digitally replicate his labor-intensive paint application techniques – align with the sense that these robotic characters lack a human element.\u00a0 (On view in Chelsea through April 14th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
