Magazine<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-230\" style=\"width: 202px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/newyorkarttours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/tammy_ben-tor_oct2008-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/newyorkarttours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/tammy_ben-tor_oct2008-1-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"Tamy Ben-Tor, Still from \u2018Normal\u2019, 2006, Courtesy of Zach Feuer Gallery\" title=\"tammy_ben-tor_oct2008-1\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newyorkarttours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/tammy_ben-tor_oct2008-1-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/newyorkarttours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/tammy_ben-tor_oct2008-1.jpg 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tamy Ben-Tor, Still from \u2018Normal\u2019, 2006, Courtesy of Zach Feuer Gallery<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nPeople are idiots.\u00a0 That is the takeaway from Tamy Ben-Tor\u2019s second New York solo show, which offers four new videos that fearlessly skewer the racism and misunderstanding between not only Jews and gentiles, but among humans as a whole.\u00a0 Using characters too foolish to be believed (including obnoxious art-world denizens), Ben-Tor shifts targets between the ugliness directed at entire groups, and the relatively harmless shortcomings of her peers.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nDespite the title of the main piece, Gewald (translatable as \u2018violence\u2019), Ben-Tor skirts direct confrontation, or provocation for its own sake.\u00a0 Her characters are laughable enough to be dismissed along with our own culpability in prejudice.\u00a0 Yet stunningly acute insights slipped into fleeting scenes or absurd utterances \u2013 a Hasidic woman denying that anyone would ever want to hurt Jews; a ditzy Fraulein still \u2018duped\u2019 by Hitler \u2013 allow Ben-Tor to lay bare our capacity for ignorance without getting on a soapbox.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nIf these characters created by Ben-Tor (who just recently performed her live work Judensau, at the Kitchen) are fantastical, her portraits of a frustrated curator, an artist laughing all the way to the bank and an arrogant art critic are also strangely off kilter.\u00a0 Contrary to the supposed careerism of today, a frazzled curator can\u2019t get artists to return her e-mails, while an aggravated critic who \u201cdoesn\u2019t even like art, let alone love it\u201d is hilarious but probably not too representative of her ilk.\u00a0 Will Ben-Tor\u2019s jumbled characters actually prompt self-examination?\u00a0 That will be the test of how deep our idiocy runs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For &#8216;Time Out New York&#8217;
