Once considered the aircraft of the future, gas inflated zeppelins lost their appeal when the Hindenberg went up in flames in 1937.\u00a0 Lee Bul<\/a>\u2019s huge zeppelin-like cylinder titled \u2018Willing to Be Vulnerable \u2013 Metalized Balloon\u2019 at Hauser and Wirth Gallery<\/a>\u00a0conjures\u00a0the appeal and shortcomings of technology\u00a0with a\u00a0shiny surface\u00a0that looks too thin to last.\u00a0 Doubled by a mirror across one wall, the balloon meets a counterpart that has no substance, existing as reflection only.\u00a0 Pictured on the mirror, a line of unicyclists with no heads suggest an unstable and potentially disastrous row of actors.\u00a0 Long interested in utopian ideals and their less-than-perfect outworkings, Bul\u2019s installation invites viewers to occupy a middle ground of attraction and unease.\u00a0 (On view in Chelsea through Oct 24th).<\/p>\n
