After he arrived in New York from Japan in the mid \u201870s, photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto<\/a> visited the American Museum of Natural History<\/a> and found the animal dioramas \u2018utterly fake,\u2019 at least until he peered at them with one eye closed. Training his camera\u2019s single eye on the museum\u2019s taxidermied big cats, hyena, polar bear and other creatures, he carefully adjusted lighting and exposure in each display to create surprisingly convincing pictures of the natural world.\u00a0 Over fifty years after the start of the Diorama series, Sugimoto returned to the museum to make a body of work now on view with some of his earlier photos at Chelsea\u2019s Lisson Gallery<\/a>.\u00a0 Printed in color on washi paper screens, the photographs complicate Sugitmoto\u2019s representation of \u2018reality\u2019 with a \u00a0format that recalls traditional Japanese painting and prominently features the dioramas\u2019 painted backdrops.
