Over 100 years after it planned to place monumental sculptures in the niches of its grand, columned exterior, the Met Museum launched its new Fa\u00e7ade Commission<\/a> with Wangechi Mutu<\/a>\u2019s regal figures.\u00a0 Titled \u2018The NewOnes, will free Us\u2019 the four-sculpture series introduced imagined divinities on a scale to match the Met\u2019s monumental seated pharaohs.\u00a0 Holding court in the Lehman Wing\u2019s atrium, two bronzes and a striding cyborg-inspired figure by South Korean sculptor Lee Bul open the excellent \u2018Face of Modern Life<\/a>\u2019 exhibition, a selection of portrait-related artwork from the Met\u2019s 20th<\/sup>century to contemporary collection. (Exhibition is ongoing while the museum builds the Tang Wing, projected to open in 2030).<\/p>\n
