With her grimacing face and distorted figure, Willem de Kooning\u2019s 1950 \u2018Woman I\u2019 is an uneasy presence in modern art history and at present, a recurring one in the Chelsea galleries. \u00a0She peers out from behind wide, stylized brushstrokes in a 1981 canvas by Roy Lichtenstein at Gagosian Gallery<\/a> and shows up in several paintings by 91-year-old surreal-pop painter Peter Saul at Gladstone Gallery<\/a>.\u00a0 Here, Saul\u2019s \u2018Woman\u2019 rolls her eyes and smirks as she descends a staircase \u00e0 la Duchamp\u2019s\u00a0 1912 \u2018Nude Descending a Staircase.\u2019\u00a0 While Duchamp\u2019s version shocked early 20th century art audiences and de Kooning\u2019s presents an uncomfortably unflattering portrayal of a powerful maternal-goddess-sex worker, Saul\u2019s version knowingly plays several roles while entertaining thoughts of her own.
