Mariah Robertson<\/a>\u2019s instantly recognizable, abstract darkroom photographs are a kind of experimental art made with filters, chemicals, selective light application and multiple exposures born from her performance practice.\u00a0 In new work at Chart Gallery<\/a>, Roberston introduces another shift in her working methods with acrylic on aluminum paintings that exactly reproduce her photograms.\u00a0 Explaining that people often compare her photographic work to paintings, she set out to discover what fertile ground lay in a new medium.\u00a0 The resulting \u2018portraits,\u2019 as they\u2019re titled, swap out the photograms\u2019 light-infused, ephemeral magic in favor of a grounded feeling, as if revealing two sides of one character.\u00a0 (On view in Tribeca through April 11th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
