The sea is calm but overwhelming in Scherezade Garcia<\/a>\u2019s paintings at Praxis Gallery<\/a>.\u00a0 Swells and currents represented by thick, multi-toned and almost calligraphic lines create a dynamic that competes with the opulent decoration worn by serene, even regal characters.\u00a0 Titles like \u2018Splendor of a New World\u2019 or \u2018Map of the World\u2019 harken to the historical arrival of Europeans in the Americas and the cultural intersections that resulted, represented in Garcia\u2019s work by the combination of baroque forms and people with what she calls \u2018cinnamon skin.\u2019\u00a0 Seeing water as a metaphor for transformation and movement, the artist\u2019s opulent vision speaks to the beauty and possibilities of fluidity.
