Late conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner<\/a> realized in 1968 that he could favor the idea of an artwork more than an actual physical object and went on to make hundreds of text-based artworks.\u00a0 Around thirty are on display at Gladstone Gallery<\/a> through Saturday, a mini-retrospective that starts with his iconic \u2018Declaration of Intent\u2019 to physically create \u2013 or not \u2013 an artwork.\u00a0 Appearing on the wall just inside the gallery entrance in pale pink text, Weiner\u2019s foundational principle is present but subordinate to bold statements in the main gallery, such as \u2018SET AT THE POINT JUST BEFORE THE POINT OF NO RETURN\u2019 or here, \u2018AS OFTEN AS NOT,\u2019 phrases that can take the mind to a place that an image cannot.\u00a0 (On view at Gladstone Gallery\u2019s 21st<\/sup> Street location in Chelsea through Oct 25th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
