Two forms lie in the foreground of this painting by Austin Martin White at Petzel Gallery<\/a>, possibly representing an animal (red) and person (blue) though they\u2019re so abstracted it\u2019s hard to say.\u00a0 Loosely based on mid-century artist American Bob Thompson\u2019s \u2018La Mort des Infants,\u2019 itself a version of French 17th<\/sup> century Laurent de la Hyre rendition of the same theme, the figures are perhaps too horrific to picture, referring to slain children and mothers, victims of Biblical King Herod\u2019s murderous decree that children under two be slaughtered.\u00a0 Informed by the recent, 1963 church bombing in Birmingham, Thompson processed contemporary events through the lens of the past; here, White\u2019s painting continues the tradition.\u00a0 (On view in Chelsea through Oct 18th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
