Robert Indiana<\/a>\u2019s 2013 Whitney Museum retrospective<\/a> aimed to look beyond his popular \u2018LOVE\u2019 logo to a career that examined the complexities of American life.\u00a0 In spring of this year, Kasmin Gallery<\/a>\u2019s focus on the late artist\u2019s early career and Pace Gallery<\/a>\u2019s current career-spanning show again argue for Indiana\u2019s importance as a Pop artist who probed darker aspects of U.S. history and identity.\u00a0 At the exhibition entrance, the words \u2018USA\u2019 and \u2018FUN\u2019 are joined by the word \u2018APOGEE,\u2019 which suggests that the first two words represent notions alien to each other.\u00a0 Elsewhere the words EAT and DIE are provocatively conjoined in one work while another bears the phrase \u2018A divorced man has never been the president.\u2019 \u00a0When Indiana focused instead on numbers, as he does in this series of ten monumental sculptures installed on Pace Gallery\u2019s terrace, the meaning derived from his own personal experience, as he considered each digit as a reference to important events and places in his own life.
