Based on angular forms but deviating from strict linearity, Jovencio de la Paz<\/a>\u2019s textiles at PPOW Gallery<\/a> invite contemplation and close inspection.\u00a0 At short range, deep textures become apparent in some woven panels, creating a surprising, almost sculptural dimensionality.\u00a0 Traditionally trained as a weaver yet working with a digital Jacquard loom, de la Paz manipulates design software to produce results in their Warped Grid series that offer a new take on the traditional \u2018waffle weave.\u2019\u00a0 The show also includes a series of warped circular forms impacted by the thickness of the thread, an aspect ration error that de la Paz describes as a \u2018queering of geometric proportions.\u2019 \u00a0\u00a0Work in the final gallery was inspired by the archaeological site of Mitla in Oaxaca, Mexico, where weaving patterns on the walls of the necropolis\u2019 structures act as portals between worlds.\u00a0 (On view in Tribeca through June 21st<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
