Internationally renowned for his stop motion animations made from charcoal drawings, South African artist William Kentridge\u2019s drawings for his new nine-part film series are the focus of his first New York solo show at Hauser & Wirth Gallery<\/a>. \u201cThe studio can be understood as an expanded head,\u201d the artist says by way of introduction to \u2018Self-Portrait as a Coffee Pot,\u2019 a show that likens the artist\u2019s creative process to percolating coffee.\u00a0 Though the films play one-by-one in the back gallery, visitors first encounter drawings and work on paper that emerged from enforced studio time during the Covid lockdown.\u00a0 Here, a full wall drawing featuring peonies (\u2018a backdrop for conversation in the studio\u2019 according to Kentridge), Leon Trotsky\u2019s head and the words \u2018Let Me Live Again\u2019 appear over pages from an accounts ledger, not only nodding to a recent project considering Russian composer Dimitri Shostavovich\u2019s relationship with authoritarian power but generally touching on themes of freedom, renewal and power.
