Irving Penn\u2019s flower photographs, featured in Vogue\u2019s annual Christmas issues from 1967 \u2013 1973 and published in a volume titled \u2018Flowers\u2019 in 1980, are the launching point and raison d\u2019etre of Sharon Core<\/a>\u2019s new body of work at Yancey Richardson Gallery<\/a>, \u2018Facsimile.\u2019\u00a0 Meticulously shot and printed, the crisp clarity and stunning color of Penn\u2019s images give way to freer renderings in Core\u2019s renditions of Penn\u2019s photos, which she painted using cyan, yellow and magenta Epson UltraChrome inks on Canson Photo Rag paper and then printed as an editioned book.\u00a0 In her past work, Core has grown flowers that she\u2019s then shot for still-life photos.\u00a0 Other projects involved photographing her own recreations of food that has been depicted in famous artworks.\u00a0 Here, she also considers the life of a subject prior to being captured in an image, but now the precursor is the medium of painting itself.\u00a0 Since the invention of photography, its function in relation to painting has been debated; here, Core reveals in the complexities, ultimately forcing viewers to confront our own expectations.\u00a0 (On view in Chelsea through April 12th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
