From the caves of Cuba\u2019s Vinales Valley to the Aurora Borealis, Teresita Fernandez\u2019s elegant sculpture is inspired by the beauty of nature but questions mankind\u2019s relationship with the land.\u00a0 In \u2018Soil Horizon,\u2019 Fernandez\u2019s current solo show at Lehmann Maupin Gallery<\/a>, the artist titles several works \u2013 \u2018Bardo,\u2019 \u2018Sky\/Burial\u2019 – after Buddhist concepts relating to the gap between lives.\u00a0 A 24\u2019 long concrete arch hints at a burial mound while thousands of ceramic cubes installed on the wall speak to a body\u2019s dispersal after death.\u00a0 A third piece in tiny ceramic tile suggests weather systems or other dynamic forces that create larger or small-scale impact on humans and the planet.\u00a0 (On view through June 1st<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
