Modeled after El Greco\u2019s \u2018The Penitent Mary Magdalene,\u2019 Mary Carlson<\/a>\u2019s small-scale sculpture of one of Christ\u2019s most devoted followers is both delicate in her tiny features and monumental in her seated, robed body. Now on view at Kerry Schuss Gallery<\/a>, displayed on wall-mounted wooden shelves amid scrolling copper piping, Carlson\u2019s new sculptures evoke the figures and decorative designs on the pages of medieval manuscripts. \u00a0Characterized by world-weariness vs El Greco\u2019s doe-eyed young woman, Carlson\u2019s saint is pictured in the process of receiving a revelation and puts a hand to her bare chest.\u00a0 Less erotic than El Greco\u2019s version, Carlson\u2019s Mary is a substantial woman engaged with the life of the mind and spirit.\u00a0 (On view in Tribeca through April 27th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
