To a soundtrack featuring readings from Charles Baudelaire\u2019s \u2018Flowers of Evil,\u2019 Apollinaria Broche\u2019s ceramic and bronze flowers strike gangly poses in her solo show at Marianne Boesky Gallery<\/a>, exuding both wonky charm and maleficence.\u00a0 Like an insect to nectar, viewers are drawn into the center of colorful ceramic flowers that feature tiny bronze sculptures – a winged horse, a contented-looking cat – of cavorting magical creatures.\u00a0 More ominous figures \u2013 snakes, flies \u2013 appear as well, suggesting that the flowers inhabit a garden less welcoming than it first appears.\u00a0 In this detail image of \u2018I hid my tracks Spit out all my hair,\u2019 skulls and daggers mingle with the seeds of this lush blossoming plant, summoning a specter of death and violence where it might least be expected.\u00a0 (On view in Chelsea through Feb 24th<\/sup>.)<\/p>\n
