Inspired by Egyptian traditions of decoration on tents used for weddings or feasts, Egyptian-American artist Ghada Amer<\/a> substitutes contemporary text for Islamic or calligraphic imagery in new work at Marianne Boesky Gallery<\/a> in Chelsea.\u00a0 Using applique, in which fabric is sewn onto other fabric, Amer incorporates feminist phrases and text into designs resembling QR codes.\u00a0 Those these designs don\u2019t scan, they open up histories of struggle for women\u2019s rights via texts by late Egyptian feminist and activist Nawal El Saadawi or late Australian women\u2019s liberation activist Joyce Stevens.\u00a0 Here, the writing reads, \u2018A woman\u2019s voice is revolution.\u201d (On view in Chelsea at Marianne Boesky Gallery through Dec 22nd<\/sup>.\u00a0 Ghada Amer\u2019s bronze series \u2018Paravent Girls\u2019 is on view at Tina Kim Gallery<\/a> in Chelsea through Dec 9th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
