Just around the corner from Picasso\u2019s etchings of muscular minotaurs hovering over vulnerable sleeping nude women in the Brooklyn Museum<\/a>, Nina Chanel Abney<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Forbidden Fruit\u2019 features very different hybrid characters \u2013 some with tenacles coming from their heads, others with horns or hair.\u00a0 Enjoying a moment of communal relaxation, Abney\u2019s characters adopt a picnicking pose familiar from Manet\u2019s Dejeuner sur l\u2019herbe amongst other iconic artworks, while engaging a different kind of forbidden fruit – a selection of luscious watermelons, made sensitive because of their racist associations.\u00a0 Both Abney and Picasso\u2019s work feature in \u2018It\u2019s Pablo-matic:\u00a0 Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby,\u2019 a group exhibition which rethinks Picasso\u2019s oeuvre via art by twenty and twenty-first century women artists whose work disrupts traditionally masculine modernism.\u00a0 (On view through Sept 24th).<\/p>\n
