This question absorbs <a href=\"https:\/\/kristensanders.com\/home.html\">Kristen Sanders<\/a> in new paintings featuring mask-like faces in pre-historic natural environments at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asyageisberggallery.com\/exhibitions\/kristen-sanders\">Asya Geisberg Gallery<\/a> in Chelsea.\u00a0 Interested both in the initial development of human consciousness and its current potential for manifestation via AI, Sanders visages look as if they\u2019ve been peeled from contemporary mannequins and abandoned in ancient shell-strewn, rocky coastal scenes.\u00a0 In this haunting image of a floating head titled \u2018Middle Paleo,\u2019 long lines across the face could reference the first deliberate marks made in sand by protohumans (a Sanders preoccupation), drips of a strange liquid or slash marks.\u00a0 The ambiguity is provocative, highlighting the figure\u2019s artificiality and strangeness and acknowledging the difficulty of reconciling such vastly distant eras of human development.\u00a0 (On view in Chelsea through July 8<sup>th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 2189px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/6c6876dc7ff53694967151f73\/images\/eb6c2f80-9212-4b89-9d19-5355e6da1ef3.jpg\" width=\"2189\" height=\"3283\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kristen Sanders, Middle Paleo, acrylic on canvas, 60 x 40 inches, 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At what point in human development did we become self-aware?
