The streetscape in this painting by Cynthia Talmadge at Bortolami Gallery<\/a> is a rendition of the gallery\u2019s actual Tribeca location, but created in a pointillist painting style, the place doesn\u2019t quite seem real.\u00a0 Appropriately, each picture depicts a scene in the imagined life of \u2018Alan Smithee,\u2019 a pseudonym used in place of a real film director\u2019s name when (s)he has lost creative control of a film and disowns it.\u00a0 Talmadge pictures Smithee in various Hollywood haunts (the Scientology Celebrity Center, the Beverly Hilton) and later in New York as he ditches his west coast lifestyle and disastrous film career in favor of a shot at Broadway.\u00a0 Redemption eludes Smithee but the story \u2013 also told with details of Smithee\u2019s life on the cover of various issues of Playbill \u2013 entices with its conflict between big dreams and dashed hopes.\u00a0 (On view in Tribeca through Feb 25th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
