After moving to Hale County, Alabama several years ago, writer, filmmaker, photographer and professor RaMell Ross<\/a> has become known for creating contemplative portraits of the area\u2019s Black residents in film and photography.\u00a0 A selection of these images are a highlight of Pace Gallery<\/a>\u2019s dual show (curated by Ross) of Ross\u2019s own work alongside artwork by the late photographer William Christenberry. \u00a0In this show, Ross\u2019 focus is on place as much as people; inspired by Christenberry\u2019s use of red-toned Alabama earth, Ross employs the material in flag boxes and picture frames and photographs dirt manipulated by man and machine.\u00a0 Titled \u2018Typeface,\u2019 this piece suggests that earth can be used as a language or means of communication as it is developed to tell a new story.\u00a0 (On view in Chelsea through Feb 25th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
