Egyptian artist Wael Shawky once said that \u201c\u2026art should be running after our own ignorance\u2026\u201d explaining that his artistic project arises from learning, particularly about how history has been constructed.\u00a0 In \u2018Isle of the Blessed,\u2019 the Egyptian artist\u2019s current solo show at Lisson Gallery<\/a>, Shawky presents a single-channel film and accompanying paintings that consider Greek mythology\u2019s explanation of place names (e.g. Europa) as a way of deriving fact from fiction.\u00a0 Mysterious, cartoonish and a little haunting, paintings such as this one, \u2018Isles of the Blessed XII,\u2019 explore the boundaries between the fantastical and the real.\u00a0 (On view in Chelsea through Jan 14th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n
