As museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art<\/a> continue to address accusations of improperly acquired artifacts, the museum\u2019s fa\u00e7ade commission of Hew Locke<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Gilt\u2019 is both appropriate and daringly self-critical. \u00a0Locke explains that his cast fiberglass sculptures, gilt to resemble valuable artworks, are a pun on \u2018guilt\u2019 and a prompt to consider how the objects in the museum have been gathered to satisfy our pleasure.\u00a0 While a creature at the base of the vessel literally devours it, eyes at the top look on in witness and a figure inspired by an 8th<\/sup> century BCE ivory in the Met\u2019s permanent collection ironically brings tribute to the Assyrian Empire.\u00a0 (On view on the Met\u2019s fa\u00e7ade through May 30th<\/sup>, 2023).<\/p>\n
