Both \u2018blue jeans\u2019 and \u2018the blues\u2019 are listed as materials in Vanessa German\u2019s towering sculpture \u2018Sad Rapper,\u2019 the title piece of her current solo show at Chelsea\u2019s Kasmin Gallery<\/a>.\u00a0 Not only a visual artist but a poet and performer, German creates descriptions of her assembled sculptures that double as poetic reflections on the thought processes behind the work.\u00a0 Dressed in blue and standing on a platform of red and white stripes, this figure represents a less easily recognized \u2018American\u2019 character, one covered in prayer bundles but laden with society\u2019s expectations.
