Diana Thater at David Zwirner Gallery

Inspired by James Turrell sculptures, in which the audience looks upward through a ceiling aperture to view the sky as art, LA artist Diana Thater devised this projection on the ceiling of David Zwirner Gallery as an homage to the dung beetle, a creature which looks to the stars to guide its ecologically critical activity. (In Chelsea through Feb 21st).

Heinz Mack at Sperone Westwater Gallery

As a founder of the post-war European ‘Zero’ Group, Heinz Mack explored the effects of light and various reflective materials in an attempt to take his art back to an experimental stage, or conceptual ground zero. Here, a ‘light relief’ sends the eye shooting around a surface of raised patterns as the light conditions and reflections in the gallery define the viewing experience. (At Sperone Westwater Gallery on the Lower East Side through Dec 13th).

Jim Campbell at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery

San Francisco-based artist Jim Campbell works with sophisticated technology to make low-res images that offer a fragment of the information we’re used to in the HD age; yet images like this one of a yellow cab whizzing by hold viewers’ attention by capturing the recognizable action of the street. (At Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery through April 19th. Also at the Museum of the Moving Image in Long Island City through June 15th.)

Emil Lukas at Sperone Westwater Gallery

Sometimes using as much as a mile of thread, Stockertown, PA based artist Emil Lukas creates an ambiguous and intriguing sense of space in two-dimensional wall pieces like ‘Red Gas,’ seen here in detail.  (At Sperone Westwater on the Lower East Side through Feb 22nd).
