Alex Prager at Lehmann Maupin Gallery

Alex Prager has explained that living in LA, she doesn’t have a lot of experience with crowds.  Her latest body of photos and her film ‘Face in the Crowd,’ makes a break with the norm though as Prager directs actor Elizabeth Banks and hundreds of other actors on constructed sets as they play out scenes of crowd dynamics from the thrilling to the terrifying.  (At Chelsea’s Lehmann Maupin Gallery through Feb 22nd).

Julie Becker in ‘Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream’ at GreeneNaftali Gallery

Julie Becker’s mixed media sculpture from 2000 brings a slice of LA into NYC by suggesting a block of West Sunset Blvd complete with weeds, a lost slipper and a drawing advertising a street art competition.  It’s a quirky, anything’s possible kind of city view that’s fast disappearing from Chelsea.  (At Chelsea’s GreeneNaftali Gallery through October 5th.)

Matthias Merkel Hess at Salon 94 Freemans

Titled ‘Hereafter,’ LA-based artist Matthias Merkel Hess’s first New York solo show features a roomful of beautiful, handmade, ceramic objects that replicate everyday items…ones you might choose to be entombed with if you were buried in the ancient Egyptian manner.  (At Salon 94 Freemans on the Lower East Side through August 9th).
