Miya Ando, ‘Rain Drawings’ at Sundaram Tagore Gallery

Raised between a Buddhist temple in Okayama, Japan and California redwood country, New York artist Miya Ando’s alertness to the nuances of the natural and spiritual worlds expresses itself in new work from her ‘Rain Drawings’ series at Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Chelsea.  Featuring a recently produced book of over two thousand pages that pairs 2,000 Japanese words for rain with an image for each, and related drawings made from indigo dye, graphite and pure silver powder, this eye-opening show sensitizes viewers to the infinite possible experiences of precipitation from ‘furious rain / very heavy rain that could potentially cause a disaster’ to ‘received rain / sudden rain.’ (On view in Chelsea through Nov 14th).
